Four teams of three jockeys took part in the points-based event – The Blues Men, Northern Mystics Women, Breakers International & Badminton NZ Apprentices. Jockeys in each team were:
Blues Men
Craig Grylls
Leith Innes
Ryan Elliot
Mystics Women
Lisa Allpress
Danielle Johnson
Sam Spratt
Breakers International
Alysha Collett (SGP)
Jordan Childs (AUS)
James Winks (Aus)
Badminton NZ Young Guns
Sam Weatherley
Taiki Yanagida
Kozzi Asano
Each team wore one of four custom-designed breeches (pants) – with the prints specially created by Benny Castles, designer at WORLD.
When asked what inspired the designs, Benny said it was all about “Auckland in the summer! Each design is a playful take on waves. Celebrating Auckland’s natural beauty, and using our surroundings of the casual beach culture that dominates summer, seemed the perfect element to turn on its head and dress up in silk for the races.”
In addition to being part of the winning team, jockey Lisa Allpress took out the leading point scorer award and, in doing so, broke a nine-year win drought at Ellerslie.
Our CEO Paul Wilcox was proud that the Club could support this unique event (now in its third year) again.
“The Barfoot & Thompson Jockeys’ World Cup is an initiative born from love and passion for the sport of thoroughbred horse racing, and we’re delighted to host such a pioneering event for the third year in a row.
“It has been wonderful to watch the commitment of all those involved, especially the jockeys who rode a series of fantastic races today. My congratulations go out to the Mystics Women’s team.
“The Barfoot & Thompson Twilight Summer Night is always a fantastic, mid-summer event, and it’s great to see the season gain momentum ahead of the SkyCity Christmas Carnival taking place here later in the month.
“Our festive SkyCity Boxing Day Races are always a big event – and a key date in the calendar for families.”
