Wondering what on earth to wear to the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Million?

We get that it can be daunting trying to work out what to wear to the races – particularly to an evening event such as the Karaka Million when the racewear experts will tell you it’s not what you’d wear on a standard night out.

Fortunately, it’s not as scary as it sounds and there are some easy ways to turn your usual after-dark outfit into something that’s more racewear appropriate.

We sat down & chatted with Auckland-based milliner, racewear guru and past Prix de Fashion judge (and winner!) Claire Hahn, who has saved you from unwanted stress with some tips & pics on how to turn heads for all the right reasons at the Karaka Million.

Says Claire…

“The Karaka Million is the true gem of the Auckland Racing Club calendar and the perfect opportunity for you to take your race wear for a more cocktail spin.

“Big brims and oversized statement millinery takes a back seat as we celebrate top notch thoroughbred racing as the sun sets over Auckland City.

“Millinery stills remains a key component to your racing ensemble and smaller buttons, chic berets, embellished headbands and oversized bows are both appropriate and perfectly on trend.

“Bold colour combinations, statement ruffles and modern prints reign supreme this summer, but don’t be afraid to push the boundaries of tradition with a smattering of embellishment, interesting textures and high shine fabrics for the most glamorous evening of New Zealand racing.

“The most successful racewear outfits are well planned and consider all the details such as your accessories, jewellery, hair and make up.

Enjoy the process of putting your outfit together- the Karaka Million is the perfect opportunity to showcase your own personal style with a race wear spin.”
