How to: Talk the talk when you're on course - Part 2

To make sure you know what you’re talking about trackside at the races, here are more racing terminology and simple racing terms to help get you started.

EACH WAY: To bet for a win and a place

FARRIER: Horse-shoer, blacksmith, (the person who puts the metal ‘shoes’ on horses)

FIELD: All the individual runners listed by race. If you “take the field” you are backing every runner in the race.

GROUP RACES: The very highest quality races which carry most prestige and prize money. (Gingernuts, winner of the 2017 Group I Vodafone New Zealand Derby is pictured above)

HALF BROTHER, HALF SISTER: Horses out of the same mother, but by different fathers. It does not apply to horses by the same father out of different mothers as stallions can serve more than 100 mares in just one season alone.

MAIDEN: A horse which has not yet won a race. Alternatively, a race for runners yet to win a race.

PENETROMETER: A device used to measure the hardness or softness of the track by measuring the extent to which the device penetrates the ground.
