FASHION | We've got the lowdown on accessories

Racewear is a bit of an art unto itself and if you really want to wow whilst oncourse, a nice dress and some heels (or suit for the lads) just isn’t enough.

That’s where the accessories come in.  A Group 1 level racewear look will contain a host of ‘extras’ that really set the wearer apart from the competition.  Sound intimidating? Never fear, we’ve got some tips to ensure you’re not left in the starting gates.

Tip 1:

Headwear is a must for the girls. If you’re looking to enter the day’s fashion competition (coming up on Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup Day we’ve got the Godavari Diamonds Style Stakes) we’d recommend checking out some of the amazing Australasian milliners who create both ready-to-wear and bespoke pieces depending on your requirements and budget.  There’s nothing quite like a hat or headpiece to really top off (excuse the pun!) your outfit.  If you’re joining us as an attendee, a fun headband, hairclip or bow are great options as well, showing that you’ve acknowledged the history of racing fashion but they’ll also still allow you to feel comfortable whilst oncourse.

And lads, don’t forget, headwear isn’t just for the girls.  A well-coordinated boater or hat can elevate a simple suit and play double duty in ensuring you’re primed and ready for a day spent in the sun too.

Tip 2:

Those little extras go a long way to completing a look.  Have you given thought to your shoes, bag and jewellery?  Shoes are a biggie for a day at the races – there’s nothing stylish about carrying your shoes midway through the day because they were a bit too uncomfy.  Aim for a block heel or wedge if stilettos aren’t your normal jam – you’ll thank us later!  Your bag should also add to your outfit, not detract, and bonus points if it’s big enough to hold your phone, lippy and wallet.

Jewellery is the icing on the cake of any raceday look.  Our recommendation is to purchase timeless pieces that can be used again and again instead of contributing to fast fashion.  One of our Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup Week fashion partners, Godavari Diamonds, has a range of accessories that you can add to a simple diamond stud to change up your look, raceday to raceday.  How good?!

Friday Candy also does a range of jewellery rentals should you want to try before you buy.

Tip 3:

Men can accessorise too!  Don’t just throw on a suit and call it a day.  The addition of a vest, pocket square or stylish sunglasses can take a menswear look from meh to marvellous so don’t sleep on the little extras.  ATR ambassador, Ryan Teece, names the pocket square as ‘the’ one accessory he uses to ensure his raceday ‘fits are top tier.

Tip 4:

Not to sound like a Disney movie but the ultimate accessory truly is a smile.  If you’re having fun and feeling good, you’ll immediately lift the overall perception of your oncourse look.  And with a day at the races on the cards, what is there to be sad about!

If you’re keen to join us oncourse (or even compete in a fashion competition), your next chance is THIS Saturday at Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup Day.
